The Incandescent Light Bulb: So Long, History! Hello to The Quotable Edison

It was said on the first day, in the Genesis creation story, let there be light. Thousands of years later, Thomas Edison created the most efficient way to harvest light into one single source. Today, we are entering the era of the CFL and LED.

CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Lamps) and LEDs (Light Emitting Diode) are now leading the way in energy efficient lighting because of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, which will phase out the use of 100-watt Edison-esque incandescent bulbs by 2012, and 60- and 40-watt bulbs by 2014.

For their part in this green effort, international retailer IKEA announced recently in the Los Angeles Times its plans to become the first major retailer to stop selling incandescent light bulbs. “Eliminating incandescents is just one simple way for IKEA customers to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gases,” IKEA U.S. President Mike Ward said.

CFLs last six to ten times longer than incandescent bulbs and use 80% less energy. LEDs, which are 70% more efficient than incandescents, can all be found at IKEA at reasonable prices. Although the LED lamps might be more expensive than the usually low-priced IKEA lamps, they save more money in the long run on your energy costs.

As for Thomas Edison’s opinion on the new lights? “All lights are wonderful. We need lights in the world. Light on everything.”* No hard feelings, right Tom?
